Going to a Gogh Gogh

Posts, and events worthy of a post, have been far and few between, so I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to have something so wonderful to post. The Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit is making it's way across the country and is in the Twin Cities through the end of October (it was recently extended). It is a beautiful digital presentation of Van Gogh's works, like Sunflowers, Starry Night, The Postman, various self-portraits choreographed to a soundtrack that includes Edith Piaf, Thom Yorke and other atmospheric pieces, classic and modern.

The exhibit is in a great warehouse space on Central Avenue in Minneapolis. We availed ourselves of the valet parking in the front of the entrance and had our masks and electronic tickets handy and walked right in. The tickets are for a specific time, and my friend got us premium tickets which included a seat cushion, which we turned in at the end for a groovy poster from the exhibit. Apparently, we were fortunate in that our Minneapolis host explained how the exhibit worked (in Chicago my friend said they received no information which made some things a little confusing). The exhibit is broken into two rooms; the first one is smaller and provides a different perspective compared to the second room which is much larger (the video is the same in both rooms). You can walk between them to get the different experience. We preferred the second, larger room, and stood for a bit until a bench opened up. The video is only about 34 minutes or so, so standing is not the worst thing, but you can sit, stand, lie down, even bring your own camping/foldable chairs if you like. There are circles on the floors to keep everyone spaced out.

I liked the music, but I couldn't help wondering how they could not include "Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)" by Don McLean, even just an instrumental version.

Watching the images moving across the walls, I could not help but think of the film, Loving Vincent, which was nominated for Best Animated Feature 2017. If you have not seen it, I highly recommend it.
